Speed Racking Empty Speed Racking

Post by Wyatt Earp Mon Mar 22, 2010 6:51 pm

I was wondering at what age or in what condition would the horse need to be in to start speed racking? Here is a video that is amazing! It starts slow but towards the end the Horse is flat out bookin it! I would like to try to work on this but my horse is only 3 years old and still growing and filling out.

Speed Racking Empty Speed Racking

Wyatt,

At three your horse should be developed enough to begin teaching any body movements but start out slow. Your horse must be able to Rack in the first place it is something bred into them. Not all Walking Horses can Rack that is why there is a separate breed registry for Racking along with their own show circuit and classes. If he can Rack you must recognize when he is doing that and encourage that movement with the way you ride. First you might get ten steps then dog-walk reward that behavior and ask for 20 steps and so on. As your horse learns what you are asking you will begin to encourage that gait while they are slowly building the muscles and ability to stay in a Rack for long periods. At the Trainers Show last weekend they had the Speed Racking World Champion do a demonstration and I agree it is so exciting to Watch!
