horse refuses to move forward Empty horse refuses to move forward

Good afternoon. I have an 8 year old gelding that I trail ride often. The problem is that when he's done, he's done. He is pretty obedient normally but when he decides he's ready to head back to camp, he refuses to move forward. I've tried circles, spurs, crops, backing...everything. We can't get anywhere until I get off of him and pony him forward or head home. I am at my wits end with him! Any suggestions?

from former panelist Cody-

Kari, next time he refuses and quits you take either your right or left rein, but only one, and pull it out to the side and wait till your real hungry, then wait a little more till you feel him shift his weight or take a step. He will more likely shift his weight first though and when he does put about 50ft of slack in the rein if you catch my meaning. Don't use any leg at all ok. This will clear this right up.
