Ergots need information about them

I was clipping the fetlock feathers off of my mare the other day and her ergots are long they look like rooster spurs.
Can you clip them just like a chestnut ? and how close can you cut either ?

Are excessively long ones a sign of any problems or do they just need grooming ?

Hiya. We'll see what Doc says, but personally, I can tell you that I pick the ergots off just like I pick the chestnuts off. They don't seem to come off flush with the skin like the chestnuts do, but they do peel and pop off. Sort of fun. The dogs like them too! (gross)
